Happy Mother's Day to all the amazing, special
mothers of the San Fernando Valley. My name is Fern, and I am the proud
mom, of two beautiful children. I have an 8 year old daughter and a 5 year
old son, and they are the most important beings in my world.
Mother's Day is especially pertinent to me, as
I realize just how fragile life can be. In 2008, I discovered that I had breast
cancer. It is a diagnosis that no mother of young children ever wants to
hear. My immediate and most pressing fear, was who would be there for my
children if I died. As moms, we are everything to our children, we
love them and comfort them, and we are always there for them. What would
happen to them if I died? This thought was way more scary than the cancer
itself.
Today, I am a cancer survivor. The cancer that had
spread from my breasts to my lungs and bones is now in remission, and I look
back and realize that having a positive attitude, some very special
friends, belonging to an amazing community and having a dedicated team of
doctors is what has made it all possible.
I have learned many wonderful things throughout
this experience and I would like to share some of them with you.
I see my cancer as a gift. It has allowed me to
look at my life and make many changes, and I think realizing we need to make
changes is a big part of beginning to heal.
I learned that there are angels who walk amongst
us. During my sickness, I was fortunate to have met the most wonderful
people, who helped and volunteered their time, who made me feel loved and cared
for, and who lifted me up, when times were tough, and who continue to do so.
I learned that diet does make a difference, and if
it is processed or packaged, I won't eat it. If it is high in sugar, it is
feeding the cancer and that a lemon a day is good for one. That brocolli,
brussel sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower are all wonderful foods.
I give thanks everyday for the drug Herceptin (a
monoclonal antibody, which targets the type of breast cancer that I have , which
is Her2+). If it were not for this drug, I would not be celebrating
Mothers Day today, with my beautiful children.
And above all, when I lie down at night I give
thanks for my blessings. My life is full and rich, and the cancer has been a
part of it. So, to all the moms out there, dealing with cancer this
mothers day, have hope, lots of hope. We have the best of both worlds, we
have amazing doctors and medicine, and we have the power to take little steps
everyday in the direction of a healthier life, simply by being aware of what we
feed our bodies and how we take care of them.
Wishing all the moms reading this, a very Happy
Mother's Day, with many, many more to come.

treatments, the hopes, the importance of proper nutrition, the support
from family and friends, and very importantly, facing this sickness with the right attitude.
